Music Theatre Training Degree Course (subject to validation)

At MTS, we believe in the unrivalled value of practical training and performance, underpinned with theory and technique. Students are trained and treated as individuals, to enhance personal strengths and develop unique talents.

The academic year is structured around performed projects and students receive rigorous and stimulating training in the three major disciplines of acting, dance and voice – both spoken and sung. Contextual studies tie these disciplines together and expose the students to all genres of musical theatre.

In addition to these core skills, guest speakers visit the Academy to give master classes in voice and performance and professional skills.

Year 1

Students are expected to achieve a high level of physical fitness and classes build flexibility, strength and stamina in all disciplines. They explore spontaneity, body confidence and imagination, textual analysis and character research in acting classes.

They work at their own level of dance skill in classes divided by ability rather than year group, as well as experiencing other movement techniques which will improve the expressiveness of their acting skills. They learn to use their voice safely and effectively to deliver text.

There are daily classes in tap, ballet, jazz, flamenco and other physical movement. Students study techniques which underpin every aspect of vocal performance, both spoken and sung. Singing is taught in group workshops in year 1, alongside repertoire, masterclasses and private tutorials.  This year is regarded as Foundation.

Year 2

Techniques which have been established are integrated into performance practice. Assessment of the students’ progress is grounded in evidence of their ability to perform within contextualised projects every five weeks. Students continue to develop at calibrated levels of tap, ballet, jazz and other physical movement and demonstrate skills acquired in contextualised projects.

Students develop a capable and versatile singing voice with a high level of technical ability across different genres of music theatre. Singing and vocal repertoire is taught in groups and individual lessons in year 2 and year 3.  Training in acting for the camera and audition skills begins.

Contextual studies include a survey of the history of musical theatre.  Students are introduced to professional practice.  This year is primarily concerned with improving technique and is regarded as adding walls to the foundation.

Year 3

Techniques are integrated into high levels of performance practice. Assessment of the student’s progress is grounded in evidence of their ability to perform within complex, contextualised public performances which demonstrate the use of integrated techniques confidently and professionally.

Students specialise the skills required in performing tap, ballet and jazz. They are able to demonstrate a flexible, versatile and commanding vocal performance which demonstrates a high level of expressive ability across different genres of music theatre. They will have a thorough knowledge of vocal techniques to a level required to explain and teach singing.

Professional practice is now embedded and the student understands the processes of seeking and maintaining employment.  This year is concerned with all-round accomplishment and is thought of as adding the roof to the walls and foundation.
